This is a Dilla tribute show that was last month and I noticed there wasn’t much posted about it, so you know I had to do something about that. Phife (pictured above) and many others performed classic Dilla produced joints with a live band backing them. Shit is just crazy. Watch the videos below and learn what a live show should look like.
EDIT: Also pay attention to Grap Luva’s vid (scroll down). He talks a little bit about Charles Hamilton, who is bitch-made. Word.
Yesterday was Rock The Bells San Francisco (it was really in Mountain View, but whatever). It was the last stop for the Rock The Bells tour this year. I can check ALOT of names off of my list of artists to see live. The Roots (pictured above) killed it. Talib Kweli and Hi Tek killed it. Unfortunately the videos I recorded don’t have sound for some reason, but I’ll find something online to post. MC Supernatural did his 3 emcee freestyle where he mimicks rappers. He did Busta Rhymes, Slick Rick, and Notorious BIG. He also incorporated items that the fans in the crowd put in his hand. These included some bud, a woman’s ID where he rhymed her last name (Peters or some shit), and a baseball hat. Busta Rhymes and Slick Rick were actually at the show performing. I was surprised that Busta actually performed part of his controversial song “Arab Money” since he got in trouble for it (the chorus offended many Muslims because it was gibberish and not actual Arabic… in Autotune). Slick Rick asked the fans whether they liked the new school or Old School better… ofcourse, the old school prevailed. He started performing Soulja Boy’s song “Turn My Swag On” and the crowd booed *laughs*. Supernatural also fired shots at Soulja Boy during his freestyle saying that he was “a real soldier, not a Soulja Boy.” It was crazy.
I was one of the lucky 8,000 people that attended the Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco on July 26th. Lyrics Born and The Lyrics Born Re-View were headlining. The Lyrics Born Re-View consists of The LB Band, vocalist Joyo Velarde and The Jazz Mafia Horns. The Mighty Underdogs opened the show with an ill performance keeping each and everyone of the 8,000 hippies, potheads, and Hip-Hop fanatics entertained. The Mighty Underdogs consists of rapper Gift of Gab from Blackalicious, rapper Lateef The Truth Speaker from Latryx, and producer Headnotic of the Crown City Rockers. There were various special guests throughout the set including Pigeon John, Trackademicks, and DJ Sharp. Kat Ouano (future mother of my children) also did her thing on the keys during The Mighty Underdogs’ set. Overall the show was ill. The scent of la in the air kept the mood right. The venue was beautiful, the music was DOPE, and I was accompanied with some of my favorite peoples. Make sure you check these artists’ music out if you havent already.
